“This is a terrible mistake. It’s an embarrassing thing”, said Greer Postmaster Carolyn Clark, of the porn line connection. “Of all the numbers to misprint, it had to be ours. I can imagine what people might think if they are already upset with the post office and are calling that number to complain.” “We can’t do anything about it now. But we can make sure that it is corrected next year”, said a spokesperson for Piedmont Directories.
The published number, in the directory’s “orange pages” under post offices is: 1-800-275-8877. It should be 1-800-275-8777.
The number is obviously a misprint”, said U.S. Postal Service spokesman Harry Spratlin. “The correct number is the Postal Service’s national number, and it does not even reach local officers. Customers are encouraged to use the national number for information about zip codes, mailing rates, etc. This takes some of the load off of local post offices.”
Clark, who has already advised high ranking officials of the error, urges area residents to use the local number 877-6423 when trying to reach the Greer Post Office.
Spratlin said “we regret this unfortunate error, and we are upset that it means that many Postal customers in the upstate will be offended when they try to reach us through this improperly published number. We want this problem solved, and our telecommunications people are looking into the possibilities for a solution.
He concluded “I know a lot of people will not be happy with this response, but we do apologize for any inconvenience.”
