City councilman Bo Cantrell defeated incumbent mayor Wright Gaines at the polls on Tuesday, winning the mayor’s seat by a 152-109 margin.
Two council seats were also at stake, with incumbent Kevin Newman taking 198 votes and former council member Caroline Broyles gathering 156 votes. Ronnie Wilder collected 92 votes to finish third in the race.
Cantrell said he thought the election was a clear call for change in the city.
“When we were out knocking on doors, people had a lot of concerns,” Cantrell said. “I think they wanted a change, and they voted for a change today.”
Cantrell has maintained that better communication is a major problem facing Inman.
“Communication is the key to everything,” Cantrell said. “That’s definitely going to be our focus, and it’s going to be something to get started with.”
Cantrell said the election process had taken a toll in recent weeks, but that he was very grateful to those who supported him.
“The past three weeks has been tough,” he said. “Words could never express the gratitude I feel. This is very humbling. If I knew the name of everyone who voted for me, I’d go thank them in person. I’m just very thankful.”
Gaines also expressed thanks to his supporters.
“I really appreciate everyone who supported me,” he said. “I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish in the past four years, and I’m honored to have served the people of Inman.
