Margaret Keith presents Alexis Steadman with her stuffed bear at Camp Care Nursing Home on Monday. Inman Elementary students received bears as part of a program in conjunction with National Nursing Home Week.
Second-grade students at Inman Elementary School made new friends on Monday. They also had some new friends made for them.
In celebration of National Nursing Home Week, residents at Camp Care in Inman put their time into making stuffed bears for 32 second-graders. The bears were presented to the students at a reception on Monday afternoon.
The program, Building Bears to Build Connections, brings the bears’ builders together with the recipient. The idea behind the program is that the students who receive a bear will make a commitment to further the connection between themselves and the person who presented the bear to them during the summer months through visits, letters, phone calls, and other means.
“We’re hoping this goes a little deeper than something like an “adopt-a-grandparent” program, said Camp Care Activities Director Shannon Henderson. “We’re hoping to build connections between our residents and the students that will last.”
Henderson said the Camp Care residents had taken a great deal of pride and put a lot of time into the construction of the bears.
