HOMETOWN NEWS
Aspiring area football players were afforded the opportunity to receive instruction from local Chapman High legends during the Toby Cates Football Skills Camp held at Inman’s Jim Everhart Field on Saturday, July 23.
Cates called on former Chapman High School teammates and coaches as well as some of his former University of South Carolina teammates to serve as instructors at the camp.
While the youngsters, ages 6 to 17, received quality instruction, the camp also brought about a reunion of some of the finest athletes to ever step foot on a Chapman football field.
In addition to Cates, who quarterbacked what many say was Chapman’s finest football team, there was Earl Pilgrim who played wide receiver, defensive back and punted, Anthony Smith and his younger brother, Otis, who both played wide receiver and defensive back and about 10 other players from that team.
In much the same way many people look forward to high school reunions, these former players looked forward to this camp.
