Despite some concerns made by two members, the Spartanburg County Council voted 4-3 to approve a new invocation policy at its monthly meeting Monday.
The new policy is in keeping with state’s Public Invocation Act and stipulates that the designated chaplain will offer a prayer that does not “proselytize or advance” any one religion or disparage any one religion.
Councilman O’Neal Mintz asked for clarification of the meaning of prayers not worded in such a way as to not proselytize, and county attorney Billy Smith said that the state law only stipulates that the prayer not be used as an opportunity to advance one religion over another or disparage a religion.
