HOMETOWN NEWS
The S.C. House representatives singled out as the “Spartanburg 6” for their opposition to a school voucher bill continued to take their message of achievement to their constituents during a series of town hall meetings last week.
On Aug. 30 the six – Reps. Doug Brannon, Eddie Tallon, Derham Cole Jr. Steve Parker, Rita Allison and Mike Forrester – appeared in Brannon’s House District 38 at Landrum High before an audience heavily peopled with educators. All but Cole, who had a family emergency, also attended a meeting Sept. 1 in Allison’s House 36 district at Lyman Town Hall.
Taking the lead before his home crowd, Brannon spoke of the Republican-dominated House’s accomplishments this session in passing 16 of 20 agenda items for the year. One of those measures, the Voter ID bill, has been criticized as unneeded, but Brannon said that research revealed 88 instances of voting fraud in recent history.
He went on to add that due to South Carolina’s history, the law is being reviewed by the U.S. Justice Department and will likely not take effect in time for this coming November’s elections.
Brannon then spoke briefly about a charter school bill saying that even though it passed the House he did not vote for it. He said he thought there already was enough choice in South Carolina. He said he disagreed with the bill’s provision allowing charter school students to participate in extracurricular activities at public schools.
