After three years of off and on discussions about implementing an agreement with municipalities over charges for prisoners held in the county jail, Spartanburg County Council gave the green light to administration to sign an updated contract with the county’s cities and towns at the council’s monthly meeting Monday.
The agreement is essentially an update of the contract drawn up in 1998 but never implemented. Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Maj. Neal Urch briefed the council on the contract and explained that the agreement was not so much about generating revenue as it was creating an incentive for municipalities to move their prisoners through the system expeditiously.
The agreement calls for a charge of $45.65 per day for municipal prisoners held at the county jail beyond 10 days. The agreement also stipulates that municipalities will be responsible for transportation and medical costs incurred by prisoners held on municipal charges.
