Despite an extension granted to the county after it made a $56,000 payment, the Spartanburg Humane Society has given the county until Oct. 31 to pay about $110,000 the shelter says the county owes or the shelter will stop taking strays from the county.
SHS President Sandy Christiansen announced last Monday that the shelter would stop taking animals brought in by county animal Control effective Tuesday because the county had an unpaid bill for services totaling close to $200,000.
Assistant County Administrator Jim Hipp said there was some confusion about the billing from SHS in that the invoice for the previous two months had been sent as an email attachment instead of the customary hard copy. The county made its monthly payment of a little over $56,000 Tuesday, and Christiansen said his board voted to extend the deadline for the county to the end of the month.
