Jed Blackwell, sports editor A local swimming team recently made a big splash at the national level. The Y-Spartaquatics team based at the Middle Tyger YMCA took their second straight second-place finish at the YMCA Short Course National Championships. The team competed against 210 YMCAs and over 1,500 athletes from around the country. They finished behind the Sarasota, Fla. YMCA, a longtime powerhouse.
“We’re getting closer,” Y-Spartaquatics coach Peter Wright said. “I’m good friends with the coaches there, and the teams have a mutual respect for each other. The competition brings out the best in the staff and the kids.”
The finish is the result of a lot of hard work on the part of the staff and swimmers for Y-Spartaquatics. Wright pointed out that the team has grown exponentially in the past several years, reaching 350 members.
