Holly Springs Fire Commission settles Jeffcoat lawsuit
Nearly a year after the Holly Springs community burst into an uproar over the termination of former Chief Lee Jeffcoat, and barely a week after three current and one former commissioners were found not guilty for willfully violating the state Freedom of Information Act, the embattled fire commission unanimously approved a $150,000 payout to settle a federal lawsuit Jeffcoat filed against the commission.
Gary Pope, an attorney with Columbia-based firm Pope Zeigler, hired to advise the Holly Springs fire commission on a November 2010 referendum, said after the May 10 commission meeting that the settlement was a recognition that going through with the whole litigation process would likely be substantially more expensive.
