In the upcoming Wellford municipal election June 7, retired law enforcement officer and mayoral candidate Tommy Watson believes it’s time for a change.
He said if elected he would work to provide a city government that is transparent and accountable to the citizens.
“We’ve got to have a government that is honest and open to the people,” Watson said. ‘We just don’t have that now.”
He said that although incumbent Mayor Sallie Peake has done good things for Wellford during her 16-year tenure, it’s time for new leadership with a new vision for what Wellford could become.
Watson said economic and business development in the city has stagnated in recent years despite a wealth of potential due to the city’s central location between the twin hubs of Greenville and Spartanburg. He added that unfortunately in recent year’s the city’s name has more often been associated with controversy or scandal and that this has to change.
