New Mayor in Wellford

By Jay King
Hometown News

After 16 years as Wellford’s mayor and periodically surrounded by controversy, Sallie Peake lost her re-election bid to challenger Tommy Watson Tuesday, 306-265.
“I want to thank the citizens of Wellford for their support,” Peake said moments after the election results were announced. “The citizens have spoken.”
An emotional Watson expressed his thanks to God, his family and supporters for helping him win the chief executive spot for Wellford.
“It wasn’t easy,” Watson said. “(The voters) wanted a change, and a change is what they’re going to see.”
He said his immediate priorities once he takes office next month would be to take stock of the Wellford’s finances. He said it is imperative that the city addresses the growing amount of debt it owes the Town of Lyman for sewer service. He added that he intends to take a close look at all of the city’s finances and accounts, especially the restricted accounts and the spending from those accounts that is part of an ongoing SLED investigation into financial irregularities.

For the rest of the story, read this week’s Middle Tyger Times.
