In a first since being elected, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright raided an illegal liquor operation near Landrum and seized close to 2,000 gallons of white liquor or moonshine last Thursday.
The 10-month joint investigation between SLED and the sheriff’s office originated with a tip that illegal liquor was being sold from a roadside fruit stand. Undercover work from that point led investigators to the discovery of a substantial distillery tucked in the woods off Plantation Drive south of Landrum.
Three men are being charged in connection with the case. Michael Eston Blackwell, 44, of 6085 New Cut Rd., Inman, has been charged with 13 counts of sale/manufacture/storage of illegal liquor. He was released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center after posting $14,000 bond Thursday.
Larry Hyder, 53, of 321 Plantation Dr., Landrum, and Carroll Campbell, 72, of 305 S. Randolph St., Landrum, will also be charged in this case but are being allowed to turn themselves in this week.
