Fire commission reignites controversy

Holly Springs residents question process for hiring permanent chief

By Jed Blackwell
Hometown News
Nearly a year after the firing of a popular fire chief by the Holly Springs Fire-Rescue District Commission, the Holly Springs community again finds itself in an uproar over who will direct their fire department.
At last Tuesday’s meeting, the Commission voted to open applications for the position of a permanent, part-time chief despite overwhelming support of Interim Chief Brent Blackwell voiced by citizens in attendance at the meeting.
The decision, which came after an executive session of nearly two hours, was approved by Commissioners Roscoe Kyle, Kelly Waters, and Ryan Phillips. Commissioner Hugh Jackson voted against the measure.
Jackson expressed a desire to wait on any decision until after the November elections. Fire Commission members in the district will be elected by popular vote for the first time ever.
