Duncan sewer, garbage rates to rise

Mayor says out of town’s control

By Jay King
HOMETOWN NEWS
Due to rate increases beyond the town’s control, Duncan Mayor John Hamby said residents are facing increased costs for sewer and garbage service.
The mayor spoke after Monday’s regular monthly council meeting and said a 6 percent increase in sewer rates imposed by the Town of Lyman and a 3.6 percent increase imposed by Waste Management were beyond the town’s ability to control.
“The cost of fuel is what’s tearing us up,” Hamby said.
He added Waste Management has historically passed along increased fuel costs but that garbage pickup fees don’t ever decrease if and when fuel costs go down.
The garbage service increase was announced in a letter from Waste Management dated June 20 — well after the town had passed its 2011-2012 fiscal year budget.
