It only took one quarter for Byrnes to pull away from an outmatched Riverside squad last Friday. The Rebels put up 35 first quarter points in their 73-0 thrashing of Riverside at Nixon Field.
Byrnes Quarterback Shuler Bentley says his team is not looking past any opponent at this point in the season.
“We’re trying to get better every week,” said Bentley. “We’re preparing for the playoffs and the region championship, so we’re not going to take any opponent lightly.”
Bentley, who concluded the night with 305 passing yards and five touchdowns, wasted no time putting points on the board for the Rebels, tossing a 53-yard score to wideout Akia Booker in the opening minutes.
Defensive back Shane Samuels followed up the score with a 63-yard interception return. Samuels also had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown, wrapping up an electric five-score quarter for Byrnes. Despite, the breakout game, Samuels was quick to hand the credit to his teammates.
“I give credit to the defensive line anytime I get an interception,” said Samuels. “Anytime I get the ball in my hands, all I can think about is scoring a touchdown.”
