Lyman police arrested two men on drug charges Nov. 22 following a traffic stop for speeding and following too closely, according to the department’s incident report.
Murad M. Abdelnabi, 29, of 11 Green Oak Dr., Simpsonville, and Keith Blane Thomas, 46, of 105 Watson Rd., Taylors, were arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia according to the report.
Officers stopped the subjects’ vehicle after noticing it was traveling 50 mph in a 40 mph zone and was following too closely. After the traffic stop when an officer asked the first subject (Abdelnabi) for his license, he was told that the subject had an international drivers license.
The report states that the officer noted both subjects appeared to be very nervous and that while he was talking to them he could smell the odor of an intoxicating beverage coming from the vehicle. The officer had the first subject step to the rear of the vehicle and asked him if there was anything init that shouldn’t be there, and the subject said there was an open beer in the vehicle.
The officer then asked the subject for consent to search the vehicle, and the first subject gave consent for the search. The officer then had the second subject (Thomas) step to the rear of the vehicle before conducting the search.
The search revealed an open 24- oz. can of beer behind the driver’s seat that was less than _ full. The officer also recovered another open can of beer from the front passenger’s side floor. The officer then Mirandized both subjects and asked if they were willing to answer some questions. The report notes that the subjects said they were willing to answer questions.
The officer then asked who the beer belonged to. The first subject said one of the beers belonged to him but that it had been in the vehicle for days. The second subject said the other beer belonged to him, and the officer noted that he could smell the odor of an intoxicating beverage coming off both subjects.
Both subjects were placed under arrest. The officer then located an SC ID in the first subject’s wallet, and a check with Spartanburg Communications revealed the subject’s license to be suspended.
Both subjects were transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center for booking. The report goes on to note that when the officer got the two subjects out of the patrol car at the jail he discovered a green leafy substance all over the back seat of the patrol car. The officer confronted both subjects with this and they both denied ownership of the green leafy substance.
The officer then located a similar green leafy substance on the outside of the second subject’s jacket. He also located a small plastic bag and a metal marijuana pipe stuffed into the rear set of the patrol car on the side where the second subject had been sitting.
The officer then booked both subjects into the jail
