Sheriff warns of increased thefts

By Kevin Boozer,
Contributing Writer

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster warns residents that law enforcement is seeing a dramatic increase in theft of recyclable metal, tractors, 4-wheelers, and other equipment.  According to Sheriff Foster, the increase in metal theft is a trend in South Carolina and across the nation because of our poor economy and the near record prices for metal.  Theft of tractors and other vehicles is up because criminals have a good market to resell those items at this time.

“We are taking a hard line about these thefts,” said Sheriff Foster, “and it is our intent to try to stem the tide of these thefts seemingly driven by the economy at hand.”

Sheriff Foster said officers will use traditional patrols, undercover techniques and high tech equipment to combat these thefts.  They also will use proactive patrols and do hard follow-up investigations when the cases are reported.

“I want to assure the victim’s of these crimes and the citizens of Newberry County that we are being proactive in the growing trend,” said Foster.
