Citizens bring concerns before town council

By Maria Williamson McMurtury
Contributing Writer

Monday night’s council meeting was filled with citizens concerned about several issues, including the closing of the town’s gymnasium to the youth of Whitmire and the high water bills for the month of December.
Mayor Carroll began the meeting by reading Councilman Brock’s resignation letter and thanking him for his twelve years of service. Mayor Carroll then gave council a draft of a procurement ordinance the town is considering adopting. In the past the council has had a verbal understanding of the dollar amount they would follow to bid out work. Councilman Lane said he was in hopes of having some news about funding for the armory but nothing has come through yet.
Councilwoman Fowler then brought up the issue of the golf course parking lot is in need of repairs. She stated this is a tourist attraction for our community and that it brings in a lot of people who spend money in Whitmire’s business community while in town.
Fowler also brought up the issues concerning the American Legion building. The town rents this building to the Legion and it is falling apart. There is a leaking pipe under the floor, the floor is falling in, the place needs to be painted and brought up to standard conditions.
