(Courtesy of SC Department of Social Services)
Jordan Suber is a 17-year-old junior at Whitmire Community School. She is the reigning Miss Union Teen 2009 and cares very deeply for the children of Union County. She has made her platform issue that of preventing child abuse and has committed herself to helping the Union County DSS spread the word of how many children are affected in this county.
Jordan is also collecting children’s clothes for the Foster Parent Association and will be participating in April and May activities with Union County DSS and the Foster Parent Association.
Union County DSS Director Deborah Bishop presented Jordan with a piece of framed art created by a foster child from Union County. She will take this with her when she speaks to groups in the community.
Jordan was also on hand for the Union County “Pinwheels for Prevention” ceremony on April 27th.
The pinwheel campaign is a symbol which can rally people around the idea of ensuring South Carolina’s children are raised in healthy, stable and nurturing environments. The pinwheel is a happy and uplifting symbol of childhood and can be used in a number of ways to draw attention to the prevention of child abuse and neglect.
Union County High School Art Students assisted in creating pinwheels so that we could have enough for one pinwheel for each current child abuse victim in the county. Pinwheels line the lawn of the Union County Courthouse to increase awareness and prevention before abuse and neglect ever happens in the first place.
