Commodities Day is June 24th from noon to 3 p.m. and Janice Carter has announced that there are 43 slots left for applications because Harvest Hope Food Bank gave her 50 more homes to take applications for. This, she says, helps Renfro’s former employees and the people of Whitmire.
Carter is concerned that no one comes to the Community Center on Tuesdays to sign up for help; therefore, she is canceling those Tuesday Sign-up Days. “There is no point to it. Mary Rice and I show up and sit for two hours and no one shows up,” she stated emphatically.
Carter added that a large number of people are coming in wanting food on the day the organization gives out commodities but she is only allowed to give those who have not signed up what they need until they have an application on file. In addition, the allotted items for the day go first to the people who have already filled out an application. Those who fail to fill out one ahead of time have to come back at 2:45. If there is any food left, they fill out the application and they will get food in August, October, and December.
Channel 19, WLTX, of Columbia is scheduled to be on site on the 24th to video a segment that promotes the work that Harvest Hope Food Bank is doing for families that need food. Janice stated that this would be a good opportunity to comment on how Harvest Hope Food Bank has helped you. To do this on air, please call Janice Carter at 694-2762 or see her when you arrive that day. She needs to put a name tag on you and/or know you are present.
If you have any questions or concerns about Commodities Day, contact Carter.
