Sweet and spicy supper at Big Willie’s Grill

By Kevin Boozer
Contributing Writer

Co-owner Chris Wilbanks prepares my Old South Burger while Ralph Rose cooks up fries.

On Friday I stopped by Big Willie’s Grill on Main Street Whitmire and had an outstanding supper.  It was my first time in this family-friendly, sit - down restaurant, so I asked the owners, Chris and Charlie Wilbanks, what they recommended.  Chris said I should try the Old South Burger, a hamburger topped with homemade jalapeno pimento cheese, tomato, and bacon.  I had the Old South Basket that included fries and slaw.  The burger had a hint of spiciness and good jalapeno cheese flavor, and it was “hot off the grill” as advertised.
Named after Chris’s father whose nickname is Big Willie, this smoke-free restaurant is open Thursday through Saturday from 4:00 to 10:00.  Charlie came up with most of the items on the menu that includes specialty burgers, wings, salads, a 6 oz. rib eye steak sandwich, and chicken strips among other items.  Appetizers include Wolverine Paws (fried dill pickles) and Big Willie Fries (a heap of fries covered with chili, a blend of cheeses and jalapeno peppers served with ranch dressing).  Beverages served are tea, beer, soft drinks, and wine coolers.
