The community of Whitmire was honored with the presence of Honorable Robert C. Lake Jr. at the community school on November 11. He began his speech relating his memories of his school years in Whitmire. At the age of 14 after school he worked in the mill for 20 cents an hour saying Whitmire was a grand place to live and a great place to raise your family.
“When I graduated high school eleven boys from our graduating class went down to enlist they took nine, one was overweight and I had poor vision. Whitmire had more volunteers in WWII than any other city in South Carolina to join the military.”
