New Year’s a good day for superstition

Did you know that during the old frontier days many people like the French-Canadian pioneers used to give gifts on New Year’s Day instead of Christmas? It was only in the 1820s after English speaking Yankees moved into the frontier did the gift - giving tradition gradually switch to Christmas.
However, the superstition of visiting the homes of your neighbors, wiping the slate clean, and forgiving old offenses continued. Indeed, there are many superstitions one can follow on New Year’s Day in the hopes of attaining a perfect year.
