The District Four board approved a resolution “strongly (urging) the South Carolina General Assembly to take prompt legislative action in 2009 to provide school districts with maximum funding and program flexibility in the current budget year in order to manage and protect from further erosion core instructional and operation services to students.” The resolution calls for more flexibility in “shifting certain categorical or line item funds and suspending state mandated programs; providing flexibility with the 180-day student attendance requirement; (and) suspending, temporarily, state testing and school district ratings requirements, except those required by federal law.”
The board also approved a raft of policy revisions concerning salary deductions; fringe benefits; hiring; promotion, retention, and acceleration of students; state program assessments; admission of resident students; and student activities.
In executive session, the board approved Mrs. Argyl J. Brewton as principal of Woodruff Elementary effective July 1. She has served as assistant principal of the elementary school. She has also taught science at the elementary and middle schools as well as in Abbeville and Greenville Counties. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Erskine, a Master of Elementary Education from USC-Upstate, and a Master of Education Administration from Converse.
“I look forward to this challenge,” she said, “and pledge all my efforts to the students, staff, and community to ensure that Woodruff Elementary School remains a safe environment in which teachers and students can engage in the learning process.”
Results for the end of course testing program have been received. The tests, which count for 20 percent of a student’s grade, were in Algebra I, English I, and Physical Science. District Four earned marks of 83.4, 77.4, and 72 in each respectively. District Four had the highest algebra score in the nine districts of Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Counties, the fourth highest in English, and the fourth highest in Physical Science. Spartanburg 3 finished first in the latter two with scores of 78.5 and 74.4.
Kim McAbee, principal of the elementary school, displayed the 2007-2010 Exemplary Writing School trophy and banner for the board. This is the school’s second time winning the award. The first was for 2003-2006. McAbee picked up the award December 8 at the South Carolina Literacy Conference in Charleston.
Connie McClain, special education coordinator, announced that a $48,000 grant has been approved for the preschool. The money will be used for Preschool Plus salaries. An IDEA Grant of $564,000 was also awarded which will go towards salaries and related services for special needs programs.
Nineteen middle school students were identified as Junior Scholars for the 2008-2009 years. This is the second highest number of Junior Scholars to date for the school.
