New Owner plans to give former ARP church a palace-like appearance

Man’s Home is His Castle… Literally

By Theron Willis
HOMETOWN NEWS

Those who have recently driven past the old Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church on West Georgia St may have noticed some curious new wording on the sign out front reading “Paul’s Palace”. The property’s  new owner,  Paul Kaminer is planning to literally make the old church his  “retirement palace.”

Kaminer said he got the idea of home - naming from a vacation trip to Bermuda. “In Bermuda it’s common for houses to have names and signs,” Kaminer said. “So since the sign was already there I thought,  ‘Why not?’”

Kaminer said he checked with the city to make sure it didn’t violate the zoning ordinance and the city’s Building Official Mike Doles gave him the go ahead,  calling it a “Residential Land Ornament”. Doles said that the sign predates the zoning ordinance and since Kaminer is not advertising anything with the sign,  there’s no violation he can see.
