 Saturday, March 27 saw the demolition of a longstanding community icon, the Northside School Building on East Peachtree St. In just a few short hours what had stood in the Woodruff community for over 70 years was reduced to rubble. Thoughts and emotions range far and wide since the dust has settled and the debris has been trucked away.
Some are bemoaning the loss of part of their heritage, others are breathing a sigh of relief, and others are merely satisfied that the city’s property code is finally being met.
The Northside School was deeded over from the Brandon Corporation (then owner of Abney Mill) to the Woodruff school district in 1935 and served as the school for the Abney Mill Village kids and other children on the city’s northern boundary until 1976 when the elementary students were transferred to the current Woodruff Elementary School.
The 40 - plus years that the school was open saw an entire generation of children come through its classrooms, and many of its former students hold fond memories of their childhoods spent within the brick and mortar of Northside and the surrounding mill village.
