Curtis and Virginia Derrick were determined to make it to Maryland on May 4.
In their eighties, the married couple loaded up their 2002 Ford Explorer that Wednesday morning and made the first leg of their trip to a US Naval Academy memorial ceremony recognizing their late son, Joe Derrick.
“I said, ‘Sweetheart, I’m going,’” Virginia Derrick said. “If Joe was living, he’d come to whatever it was, if he had to come on a stretcher.”
