County’s next veteran affairs officer speaks of faith on the battlefield

By Brandon L. Leonard
HOMETOWN NEWS

What some would count as luck, Vietnam veteran Terry Simmons considers to be divine providence.
“Your life’s just not as sound and secure as you think it is,” Simmons told a group of more than 100 who attended a Veterans Appreciation Service at Bellview Baptist Church in Woodruff on Sunday, May 22.
And Simmons would know. He is one of only six survivors from his company who fought at the Battle of Hamburger Hill.
“Do not be afraid that the next breath you take may be your last,” Simmons said. “It’s a hard message to take, but we have soldiers that will face that this morning. So why don’t we face it too?”
The Enoree native and future Spartanburg County veterans affairs officer spoke about the role his Christian faith played in his military service during the Vietnam War. Candidly, Simmons recounted some of the events from the Battle of Hamburger Hill and the personal battle he faced daily during that time.
