City Council tabled a proposed ordinance calling to raise the rate of new connections to the city’s sewer system by residential properties from a flat $500 fee to $2,000 or more, depending on the size of water line used to feed the structure.
“This is something the city needs,” Public Works Director Lee Bailey told City Council in a presentation outlining the current state of the city’s sewer system on August 30. “Our sewer system is in 1986 right now. Except for parts of it, that’s as modern as we get.”
While not in immediate need of replacement, 25 years of constant operation is substantial for a wastewater treatment facility. The raise in rates is an attempt to generate funds to seed the purchase of a new facility in the near future and cover maintenance needed to keep the system running smoothly.
