Two arrested in connection with animal shootings

HOMETOWN NEWS

Spartanburg County sheriff’s investigators have arrested two men in connection with a series of incidents near Woodruff where farm animals were shot sometime during the night of Sept. 29.
Brandon Kelly Thomas, 21, of 131 Skinner Rd., Woodruff, and Anthony Jerome Waters, 17, of 150 Reagen Ln., Woodruff, were both charged with three counts of animal torture, according to sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Tony Ivey. Thomas remained in jail as of press time Monday, but Waters was released on a $10,000 bond Sept. 30.
According to incident reports, deputies responded to a drive-by shooting call at the intersection of Brown Kennedy and Racetrack Roads near Woodruff where they discovered the bodies of a llama and donkey that had been shot and killed. Another donkey was still alive but suffered from at least four gunshot wounds, the reports state.
While speaking with the animals’ owner, deputies learned from a neighbor that a series of 15-20 gunshots were heard a little before 1 a.m. Thursday. The neighbor said it appeared the gun had been fired from a slow moving car on Racetrack Road.
The neighbor said he then stepped onto his front porch and heard another 15-20 rapid gunshots coming from the area where the llama was later found dead. The neighbor said he did not notify the animals’ owner that night but did so after daybreak when he saw the dead animals.

Woodruff resident Jody Lamb, left, holds steady the head of a goat around 1 p.m. on Friday, September 30, at his farm at 1717 West Georgia Rd. in Woodruff as Spartanburg County Sheriff’s deputies investigate the animal’s wounds. Lamb suspected the animal was shot last Wednesday night, the same evening two other local farms reported having animals shot. The goat pictured was shot in the side, leaving its hindquarters paralyzed, and would have to be put down, Lamb said. Another of Lamb’s goats  was also injured and limped as it walked.
