Spartanburg County Veterans Affairs Officer Terry Simmons has apparently been suspended from his job by county administrators amid accusations he brought a firearm onto county property.
Simmons said Friday he was called into a meeting with interim County Administrator Nelson Marchioli about two weeks ago and suspended for bringing a pistol onto county property. County officials repeatedly contacted to confirm the suspension had failed to respond as of press time Monday.
Simmons said he took a 60-year-old pistol into his office in the bottom of a work bag to show a representative from a Fountain Inn company specializing in presentation cases and displays. He said the weapon along with a set of dog tags were the two things his father gave him prior to his death in 1995 as family keepsakes and that he wanted to get an idea of how to incorporate the items in a display of his military decorations earned during combat in Vietnam.
